What’s It All About?

The Maryland Film Festival (MFF) is an annual, four-day event during first weekend of May. It presents top-notch film and video work from all over the world and will screen over 60 films from around the globe, including narrative, documentary, animation, experimental and hybrid.

For every North American feature film screened within the festival, a filmmaker attends the festival to present their work. The hundreds of filmmakers who have hosted screenings at the MFF include the likes of John Waters, Barry Levinson, Kathryn Bigelow, Jonathan Demme, Melvin Van Peebles, Aslex Gibney, Matt Porterfield, Joe Swanberg, Lisandro Alonso, Todd Solondz, Bobcat Goldthwait and Lena Dunham.

In addition to a wide range of contemporary North American films, the festival also includes a sampling of cutting-edge international features, a vintage silent film with live musical accompaniment, a classic 3D film, and a feature selected and hosted by legendary filmmaker John Waters (whose choices have ranged from Joseph Losey’s Boom! to Gaspar Noé’s I Stand Alone).

Watch Out For!

Opening Film: Coffee, Kill Boss

The festival has selected Coffee, Kill Boss as the opening night film. The film is set on the 20th floor of a monolithic corporate tower, and follows ten executives who secretly meet to sell their company, but instead become victims of an outrageous murder scheme. Director Nathan Marshall and film star Peter Breitmayer will be on the red carpet and answering questions after the film is screened.

Abuse Of Weakness: Hosted by John Waters

Beginning with its inaugural year in 1999, each Maryland Film Festival has included a favourite film selected and hosted by legendary filmmaker (and MFF board member) John Waters. This year’s selection is Abuse Of Weakness, the latest feature from Catherine Breillat (Fat Girl, Romance). The film stars Isabelle Huppert as a filmmaker who suffers a stroke and, on the path to recovery, welcomes notorious hustler Vilko Piran (French rapper/producer Kool Shen) into her life. This film tells a painful and very personal story that parallels Breillat’s own recent real-life experiences.
