The second instalment in the hit franchise Student Of The Year released today but the numbers are underwhelming. Student Of The Year 2 (SOTY 2), starring Tiger Shroff and debutantes Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday, had created a lot of buzz but its opening has not enthused exhibitors and programmers of major multiplex chains across the country. They gave us a mixed response to the film’s box-office performance on its first day. In some places, the business of SOTY 2 was compromised by the dominance of Avengers: Endgame.
Thomas D'Souza, Senior Vice-President, Programming, PVR Limited
Occupancy for the morning shows of SOTY 2 was an average 35 per cent from all our screens. I think the film will pick up in the evening. Advance booking and public reports are decent. Pan-India, SOTY 2 is likely to collect Rs 9 crore at the box office, which is not a bad number. People are intrigued by this film because the first instalment was a success.
Devang Sampat, Director of India’s Strategic Initiative, Cinepolis
SOTY 2 opened very well at Cinepolis and I think the film will pick up during subsequent shows. People liked the trailer and the songs are also creating a big buzz. The morning shows had occupancy of 70 per cent, which is great. Avengers: Endgame is doing extremely well but it is not affecting the business of SOTY 2 at our cinemas. Both films have a very different audience. We are expecting admits of 2 lakh at Cinepolis by the end of the day.
Yogesh Raizada, VP, Wave Cinemas
SOTY 2 did not open very well at our cinemas. The morning shows ran only 10-20 per cent full. Considering the public reports, it seems the film will not pick up during the afternoon, evening and night shows and occupancy will not be more than 30-35 per cent. Our properties are in the Punjab belt. SOTY 2 is not doing well because it is competing with Punjabi films that are running well there. There is no advance booking either.
Tinku Singh, Group President & CSO, SRS Cinemas
The film opened to very poor figures. Occupancy for the shows so far was about 20-30 per cent, which is very disappointing. Worse, I don’t think occupancy will rise for the evening and night shows because there is no advance booking yet. SOTY 2 is being hampered by the Avengers: Endgame, which is hugely popular. When you compare SOTY2 to Dharma Productions’ last film Kalank, fewer people are buying tickets for SOTY 2. Movie-goers are opting for SOTY 2 only if there is a dearth of tickets for Avengers: Endgame.
Pushkaraj Chaphalkar, Partner, Citypride
The morning shows of SOTY 2 were decent and occupancy was about 40 per cent. But now it seems that booking is very slow. Advance booking for the rest of the day is only 10-15 per cent. Given the numbers so far, I predict that the film will earn Rs 15 lakh at our theatre today. All-India, it will earn Rs 9-10 crore today.
Ashutosh Agrawal, Director, Star World Cinemas
SOTY 2 took a decent opening today; not too good and not too bad. Occupancy was about 20 per cent. The less than healthy numbers may be attributed to the summer heat, which is scorching here in Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, elections are also underway. I expect better footfalls in the evening and for the night shows. The hype around the film is definitely helping it perform at the box office.
