The Akshay Kumar-starrer Kesari, based on the Battle of Saragarhi, has surpassed everyone’s expectations by earning the highest day-one collections of 2019. Despite the shows starting only after 2 pm in most cinema houses due to the Holi holiday yesterday, the film earned more than Rs 20 crore on the day of its release. Kesari is expected to do extraordinary business during the weekend due to the strong word-of-mouth buzz that it is already enjoying. Distributors across India share their outlook on the business of the film:
Debashish Dey, Distributor, West-Bengal
Kesari is doing amazing business in my territory. The collections are very good and even the word-of-mouth is very strong. The collections would have been even better but multiplexes here were closed for half a day because of Holi yesterday. However, since the shows started after 2 pm, multiplexes clocked good footfalls, which picked up even more in the evening. Today’s morning shows are a little slow since it is a working day but by afternoon, things will be back on the track. Today’s collections will be similar to yesterday’s, and Sunday seems set to do outstanding business.
Pramod Thakur, Distributor, East Punjab
Kesari collected Rs 2.65 crore in East Punjab on its opening day yesterday. Due to Holi, the shows started after 2 pm. But as soon as they began, occupancy was almost 100 per cent till the last shows, at 8 or 9 pm. If the movie had been running all day long, the film would have earned around Rs 30-32 crore. People love the film, especially the second half.
Balkrishna Shroff, Distributor, Mumbai
Kesari pulled in bumper collections yesterday. The film is off to a great start and has exceeded my expectations. Today being the second day, collections may see a drop. The film will pick up during the weekend and Sunday should see bumper collections again. The reports are very positive.
Ravi Machchar, Distributor, Nizam
The footfalls are very good for Kesari, which is doing extremely well in my territory. Yesterday, there were no morning shows on account of Holi. The film started screening in the afternoon and, after that, there was no stopping this superstar Akshay Kumar-starrer. Pan-India, the collections were around Rs 20 crore. The word-of-mouth for the film is extraordinarily good and, as a result, the film is doing extremely well. Today will be the same as yesterday and will pick up further during the weekend. The film may easily collect more than Rs 80 crore by the weekend. People coming out of theatres are saying it’s a brilliant film.
Sunil Bansal, Distributor, Rajasthan
The film opened very well in my circuit and, as far as I know, it did an amazing business in almost every circuit. Yesterday was a holiday due to which theatres started with the matinee show. Despite this, the film did extremely well. Akshay Kumar is a big star and he has his own fan base, who will not miss this film. Pan-India, the film earned Rs 21 crore yesterday and it seems set to clock similar numbers even today.
Gaurav Ruparel, Distributor, Saurashtra
The film is doing very well at the box office despite the holiday yesterday and the ongoing exams for youngsters. Yesterday, the film earned more than Rs 20 crore plus pan-India and in my circuit more than Rs 30 lakh. The reports of the film are also very positive. Kesari will clock even higher numbers at the weekend due to good word-of-mouth. It is faring even better than I expected.
