John Abraham’s labour of love Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran hit the screens today. The film, which is based on the nuclear bomb test explosions conducted by the Indian Army at Pokhran in 1998, has opened to a positive response. The reviews of the film have been largely good and those who have watched the film have praised it. The box office reports echo similar sentiments and the numbers are expected to grow in the coming days. Box Office India spoke to some of the film’s distributors and this is what they had to say about the film.
Anil Thadani, Distributor
The movie opened to 15-per cent occupancy in the morning. The reviews are good and the numbers are expected to go up through word-of-mouth. We have to see how the film performs over the weekend because with the IPL final on Sunday, there may be some impact. But the overall buzz around the film is positive.
Debasish Dey, Distributor
Parmanu has taken a very good opening in spite of it being a Friday, in spite of Ramadan. I am screening this movie in my own theatre, Paradise cinema. And within a half-kilometer radius, there are three auditoriums – New Empire, Paradise and Elite. The seating capacity in all these cinemas is 1,000 to 1,200 and the morning shows and afternoon shows have had almost 30-per cent occupancy. I feel this is a very good opening, especially looking at John Abraham’s track record because his last few movies didn’t do well. The IPL final on Sunday may have some impact but the three-day weekend should be 30 plus.
Sanjay Marudhar, Distributor
Parmanu has opened well and the morning show occupancy was quite good. It was at the level of 40-45 per cent and, overall, 20-25 per cent. That’s very good, according to me. The audience response has been good, the reviews have also been positive and word-of-mouth is excellent.
Jeetu Khandelwal, Distributor
Parmanu has opened well. We had released Raazi as well and the opening is similar. Reports coming in are good, though they are mixed in some places. Some are saying the film is good, while some have not liked the first half and have praised the second half. Some have liked the climax. The film is expected to do well over the weekend. The reports are good and the climax has been appreciated. Ours being the Odia territory, they don’t understand Hindi so well. But the reports from multiplexes have been positive.
Jaspal Dhingra, Distributor
The reports of Parmanu are very good. People who watched the film yesterday and those who have watched it today are praising the film. It starts a little slow but it picks up well. In the classy centres it has opened well but in the massy centres, the 2- and 3-star centres, it has not opened as expected. Here, it will grow with the evening shows.
The report from multiplexes is very good. It has reminded people of Madras Café. The IPL final on Sunday may affect the film’s collections a little but the word-of-mouth publicity around the film is good and it will definitely grow. The film could not be promoted well so that has made a difference but the content is good so the numbers will catch up. I was looking at Gorakhpur and the second show is house full.
B H Basha, Distributor
The morning shows have been dull as it is raining here. But after 4 pm, the movie is expected to pick up. The reports are good and it will surely improve over the evening shows and the weekend.
