And the countdown begins for one of the most-anticipated movies of this year, Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju, featuring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. Here are the programmers of various multiplex chains talking about the initial response to the film as advance booking opens.
Amar Laykar, Programmer, PVR
The response to Sanju is very good so far, and day one looks very promising. Over the weekend, the figures will rise. Footfalls for day one stand at around 53,000. As far as the weekend is concerned, footfalls are expected to hit 1,05,000.
Satish Kondvilkar, Programmer, Inox
The buzz around Sanju is very good. Advance booking started on Sunday in two to three auditoriums and we are getting a very good response. We have sold 56,000 tickets so far. The nett collection on day one might be around Rs 5.25 crore from Inox properties all over India.
Nitin Tambat, Programmer, Carnival
The advance booking numbers are growing every day and the anticipation surrounding Sanju is amazing. The buzz about Rajkumar Hirani’s films is always huge. To top that, the film stars Ranbir Kapoor and he is playing Sanjay Dutt. There are so many big names attached to the film. So far, footfalls have touched 40,000.Tomorrow, the numbers will rise even more.
Kaushal Srivastav, Programmer, Cinepolis
The buzz about Sanju seems really good as people are very excited and curious to know about Sanjay Dutt’s life. He has always enjoyed an incredible fan following. In our properties, the number of tickets booked in advance is close to 32,000, which is great. Our expectations from this film are high.
Yogesh Raizada, Programmer, Wave
Sanju boats a deadly combination. Rajkumar Hirani and Ranbir Kapoor will come together to tell the story of Sanjay Dutt. Sanjay has a huge fan base. His life has been very intriguing and full of twists and turns. The things that have happened to him are the things that almost everyone knows. Now, they want to watch them on the big screen. Ranbir and Hirani are credible names too.
The film should make good numbers on its first day, and 15-20 per cent advance bookings have already taken place and bookings for all the shows have not yet opened. Once they do, the numbers will improve further. I believe the film will open to 90-95 per cent on its first day.
Amit Sharma, Programmer, Miraj
The buzz surrounding Sanju is very good and advance booking too looks good. We opened bookings on Sunday in a couple of properties. From Monday, we started it in the rest of the properties. It’s been just three days and we have already sold 7,000-8,000 tickets, which is very good. It seems Sanju will take the biggest opening of the year so far.
I am expecting more than 50,000 footfalls on day one. At Miraj Cinemas, the film is likely to earn close to Rs 60-65 lakh on its first day. All over India, collections might touch Rs 32-35 crore. For Ranbir (Kapoor), no other film after Besharam will have seen a huge opening. With Sanju, he will be back.
Pushkaraj Chaphalkar, Programmer, Citypride
The buzz around Sanju is decent. We opened advance booking on Sunday but the momentum is not as great as we had expected. The morning show for day one is 50 per cent full right now. But bookings for shows later in the day are a little weak. By tomorrow, the percentage will increase. On Friday, collections in my theatre chain should be Rs 25-30 lakh and I am assuming 55-60 per cent occupancy on day one. It will easily go up during the weekends.
Meenu Singh, Programmer, SRS
The buzz and anticipation regarding Sanju is good. Since it is a big film, advance bookings at our theatre chain started on Saturday. The advance booking figures stand at 25 per cent so far but the numbers will rise. I think the first-day occupancy will be around 70 per cent.
