Ever since its trailer released, the trade expected the film to rock the box office. Then, when the songs of the film became hits, the industry expected Veere Di Wedding to take a flying start. Not only did the movie open to spectacular numbers, the momentum at the ticket counter has kept growing with every successive day, in its first week.
The acid test was on Monday, when numbers usually dip; but not for this film. The numbers of Veere Di Wedding surpassed everyone’s expectations and the movie held rock solid even on its fourth day. After passing all these tests, the film is going great guns even on day five. It seems there is no stopping this Shashanka Ghosh directorial.
In the absence of any big Hindi releases on the upcoming Friday, Veere Di Wedding is expected to have a great second week, with numbers comparable to those in week one. Here are a few distributors talking about how the movie has fared in their respective territories, and what’s in store in the next few days.
Tarun Tondon, Nizam Distributor
I think the first week looks great. The film has done really well in the first three days. There was a slight fall in numbers on Monday, but that is expected for any film. The first four days earned Rs 40-41 crore, which is exceptionally good. In terms of occupancy, the weekend was 70 per cent and now it is around 30 per cent.
The reviews of the film have been mixed, but it is a fun film. People will go and watch it. It is a good film, it looks good, it looks fresh. It is a complete package. Looking at Monday and Tuesday’s trends, the movie will hold through the week despite the release of Jurassic World and the Rajinikanth-Nana Patekar starrer Kaala. Veere Di Wedding may not have repeat value but its second weekend also looks good in the metros.
Anil Agarwal, Delhi-UP Distributor
The response to the film has been extraordinary. The movie will definitely do well in its second week. It has good content and that has contributed to its numbers. Occupancy for the film is more than 30 per cent. The movie should earn around Rs 80 crore at the box office.
Balkrishna Shroff, Mumbai Distributor
Veere Di Wedding is doing terrific business in my area. I have been reading about the collections and they are superb. It has exceeded my expectations. Since its collections have already crossed Rs 42 crore, they will cross Rs 50 crore this week. With no other Hindi film releasing till next week, this film should continue to do well. There was a time when movies would not release during Ramzan but this one has and it has not affected its business.
Ravi Machchar, Nizam Distributor
Veere Di Wedding is doing really very well at the box office. I had not expected the film do so well and it has outperformed. Weekend business of Rs 35 crore is really very good. With around Rs 5 crore on a Monday, the movie should end the week at Rs 50 crore. People have decided that they wanted to watch this film, so neither did the post-IPL period nor Ramzan affected the film. Jurassic World and Kaala are releasing this week, but the movie should continue to do well. It all depends on how many shows the movie continues to get. Kaala is an AA Films movie and Jurassic World is Universal’s. So they will get screens.
Sakshi Mehra, Delhi-UP Distributor
The response to the film has been good. The first three days were very encouraging. As per feedback from my cinemas, a section of the audience was uncomfortable with the language in the film, in some places. But the collections have been good. The post-IPL weekend has not been a factor in the performance of the film. Good content always works.
