Tanu Weds Manu Returns drew a heartwarming response from the audience and is still winning hearts. Apart from the leading star cast, it was the supporting actors who also mesmerised the audience with their performances. This week, we spoke to Deepak Dobriyal, who returns in the sequel as Pappiji.
On Tanu Weds Manu Returns
When Tanu Weds Manu released, movie-goers complained to Aanand (L Rai) that they missed Pappiji, which was me as I was barely present in the second half of our first release. So while drafting the sequel, Aanand and Himanshu (Sharma) kept it in mind and wrote an engaging screenplay, which had me in the second half too.
On shooting experience
Only a few new characters have been introduced in the sequel. But Himanshu, our writer, told me that he wanted to show that all the characters have grown in the last four years. So when you see Pappiji this time, he knows Manu loves Tanu but he also knows he can’t keep running behind them as they are already married, otherwise he will always remain single. That’s the kind of growth our writer has written. As an actor, I always surrender to the director, and it’s very easy to surrender to Aanand because you know he will give you the freedom to deliver.
Improvising on sets
Himanshu writes the character and is always present when you’re acting. So we used to improvise on the sets… how we would deliver a dialect or the tone of the character. All the characters are very innocent and there is a kindness in the way they talk, so we maintained that.
Chemistry with Madhavan
Sure, Tanu Weds Manu and the sequel are a love story between Tanu and Manu but there is chemistry between my character and Madhavan’s too. He knows that no matter wherever he goes, I will be there for him and that’s why, while returning from London, Tanu informs me about Manu’s whereabouts. During the shooting, Madhavan and I developed a certain chemistry. This is our third film together – 13B, Tanu Weds Manu and Tanu Weds Manu Returns – so we have grown over the years.
Hopes now industry will take notice
I have never been jobless but I was never offered meaty or good roles. Sometimes, one says yes to some roles because one is in need of money but I am very selfish when it comes to acting, I can’t do that. So, in the last few years, I have shot for short films with film school students. Now that Tanu Weds Manu Returns has released, I hope directors will notice me and offer me some good roles. My next release is Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
On the response
I have done many films but none of them has got me recognition like this. Wherever I go, people come up to me and talk to me. It doesn’t stop! I am thrilled that everyone liked my performance so much. I knew it would be a good film but I never thought my character would get so much love and appreciation. Everyone is talking about the way I delivered my lines. It’s a unique feeling.
