Mrunal Thakur's Love Sonia is the gruesome tale of a 17 year old in search of her sister, a character played by Riya Sisodiya. The journey takes her into the world of human trafficking and the film is surely going to leave you with tears in your eyes. Though it must have been difficult to shoot such a dark movie, imagine the prep that went into it! Yes, Mrunal and Riya underwent extensive prep for the movie and it actually left them depressed. Yes, at one point, Mrunal wanted to run home, that hard it got for them.
In an exclusive chat with us, Mrunal and Riya opened up about their prep work and the shocking details will leave you stunned. Talking to Box Office India, Mrunal revealed, "The moment we got to know that Riya and I both are on board; Tabrez booked our flight to Kolkatta. We spent three to four days in Sonagachi, the red light area. Tabrez made sure that he doesn’t rehearse a lot of lines with us because we would get only mechanical. What more important was to observe these ladies. He believes in the power of observation. He said when you go to the brothel, click lot of pictures and ask them their stories. Also, he warned us that from day one they will not be very open to us. They will be little hesitant as they don’t trust people very easily. They were quite open to us on day two or day three. They shared their stories and the stories really broke my heart to an extent where I fell unwell."
Riya butted in and added, "We were depressed actually. We wanted to go back home." Mrunal concurred and further revealed, "We got to know the facts like the body language and the kind of slangs they use. We also had a detour in their houses which were very small. It was one room with a bed which was elevated with the bricks. I asked her why it was elevated and she said, didi jab clients aate hai toh mein aur client upar rehte hai aur bachha aur pati neeche sota hai. I asked her how many clients you serve every day. She said ‘if there is any festival or cricket match, then 40-50 clients come per day’. How much money do you get? ‘That depends, if he wants to beat us the amount is different and if he wants to dance, the amount is different.” How differet? She said, “30 rupees or 50 rupees.” When I asked her why so less, she said “Who bhi humari malkin le leti hai.” If someone buys a girl in brothel, they pay some amount. For example RS 20,000. Us ladki ko kaha jaata hai yeh jo karza hai tuje utarna padega. Also, they are always made feel that they are worthless. If there is a girl, 13 or 14 years old, they would make her pregnant and they will take away her child. She will be harassed that if you want your child, you have to do certain things. It doesn’t matter, whether she is unwell, she is in her periods or she is pregnant. She has to do her work. These are the kind of things which we got to know and they were very depressing."
