Cut the perfect trailer and it’s half the battle won. In fact, many would even call a trailer a litmus test of a film’s box-office collections. This week, we asses three films – Madras Café (trailer launched July 11), Besharam (July 30) and Krrish 3 (August 5) – on the basis of their trailers and find out what distributors and exhibitors feel about the performance of these films.

All the three trailers were really interesting. Madras Café stood out because the trailer had a very thought-provoking look. We will have to wait to see the kind of business the film generates because there is a cluster of releases alongside this film. So I am a little sceptical about its business.

The trailer of Besharam has the appeal of Ranbir Kapoor written all over it and it has definitely created a buzz. This film will likely earn more than Rs 100 crore. The most recent trailer, of Krrish 3, has been accepted by the audience and has clocked a record number of hits on YouTube. The film, like its trailer will break records at the box office.

In terms of generating a buzz through their trailers, Krrish 3 is way ahead in the race. The trailer has been appreciated by the audience as well as the film industry. It has created such an impact that the film is likely to cross the Rs 100-crore mark in the first three days of its release.

Besharam’s trailer has been well-received and it generated a buzz mainly because it is a Ranbir Kapoor product. The audience is keen to see what Kapoor offers next and so the trailer is tracking well. There is an added curiosity about the songs of the film. Since Kapoor’s last release Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani had very popular songs, the makers of Besharam should now start revealing the music of the film. If the songs become popular, there will be no stopping for the film.

The trailer of Madras Café, on the other hand, was unable to create a buzz around the film. The trailer was very vague, so there are doubts about the film’s prospects. The sad thing is that the film is approaching its release and there is no new trailer or promotion. If they ramp it up now, it may still help the film. But I have very little faith in the product.

The trailer of Krrish 3 looks the most promising. It has given just the right glimpse into the film. While it reveals all the essential elements of the story, it has also showcased the exceptional special effects used in the film. This has created huge excitement among the audience and the film will break box office records.

Besharam is likely to do tremendous business in our Punjab territory since it is a Ranbir Kapoor film and he is a favourite here. He is also riding on the success of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which further helps. The Besharam trailer has been well-received by the audience here. I don’t want to comment on the trailer of Madras Café as I haven’t watched it.

Sarang Chandak, Shri Rang Films

The trailer of Krrish 3 is one of the best this year. The promo revealed details of the film without revealing too much. That’s exactly how one should cut a trailer. Krrish was a very rooted Indian superhero franchise. Hence, its sequel will take the story forward, unlike a host of films that claim to be sequels but have no connection to their previous instalments. Krrish 3 should earn Rs 300 crore.

Besharam has Ranbir Kapoor in a very tapori kind of a role and the trailer has been well received. This is the first time he is doing a character like this and there is a hunger among the audience to know more. Director Abhinav Kashyap has left his trademark Dabangg impression on the trailer, which was a smart way to create the audience recall. This film might break Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’s record and earn Rs 200 crore at the box office.

Madras Café doesn’t have a cast that commands roaring box office success. Besides the film is about terrorism and this genre has never done well in India. The trailer has had very limited appeal. But if the content of the film is good, it might pick up, just as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag did.

Vasudev Chachan, Sunny Films

The trailers of Krrish 3 and Besharam have generated a very good response among the audience. While the former manages to impress with every film in the franchise, the latter looks interesting since it has Ranbir Kapoor in a never-seen-before role. Both these trailers have surpassed our expectations.

On the other hand, the trailer of Madras Café has not created any excitement at all. It did not receive a good response. Business-wise, Krrish 3 will score the highest among the three films. In fact, it will be one of the biggest grossers of the year. Thanks to Ranbir Kapoor, Besharam will manage better business than his last release. Madras Café will not fare well at the box office.

The trailer of Krrish 3 has managed to charm the audience and the trade. It is Hrithik Roshan’s outing after a long time so his fans were eager to lap up the trailer and are awaiting the release of the film. Also, it’s been a while since the audience saw a Rakesh Roshan directorial venture, so expectations are rife. The special effects shown in the trailer are of Hollywood standards and every distributor will vouch for the film’s success. It will gross Rs 250 crore.

Besharam is Ranbir Kapoor’s next and the trailer showed him in a new avatar. This has created a lot of buzz. As they release more details of the film, the audience will grow only curiouser. The movie should hit the Rs 100-crore mark.

Madras Café did not create a huge impact through its trailer. John Abraham doesn’t have the kind of draw that the other two actors have. Besides, the trailer does look Hollywood-esque but of the old Sylvester Stallone films like Rocky and First Blood. This is not new and, no, the trailer did not impress. The film is likely to earn only Rs 50-60 crore at the box office.

The Krrish 3 trailer left me spellbound. Rakesh Roshan’s trailer is a super hit and has received a phenomenal number of hits on the Web. Not just the trailer, the film will be a superhit too. In fact, it will create a record of the fastest Rs 100-crore. The trailer has all the right elements to lure the audience to the cinemas.

The trailer of Besharam suggests a fun film and it will go down very well with the youth. This will be another hit for Ranbir Kapoor, who is one of the most sought-after stars. He has great recall value, so the audience wants to watch more and more of his films. This movie will do very well at the cinemas.

The trailer of Madras Café has created curiosity. While being restrained, it has left the audience inquisitive. I have no idea how the film will perform at the box office.

Krrish 3 and Besharam have managed to charm the audience with their trailers. Krrish 3 has a very Hollywood look. The children will love the film as it is a family entertainer. The trailer has also impressed distributors.

Besharam has given us a glimpse of Ranbir Kapoor, whose previous films have been hits. This film seems like a love story and, like most of Ranbir’s films, there are high expectations of the music. It will do well in cinemas. Madras Café’s trailer is all right. They have not revealed very much but as we approach the film’s release, the producers have started exploiting the film to its full potential.

The trailer of Krrish 3 has created frenzy online. The YouTube hits and comments are testimony to the film’s popularity, and downloads of the trailer have gone through the roof. Word-of-mouth has spread like wildfire. As more details of the film are revealed, it will gain further momentum. Every film in the franchise offers something new to the audience. The trailer is slick and very trendy.

Besharam’s trailer appears OK but the film has all the ingredients of a hit. It will be commercially successful because of Ranbir Kapoor. Madras Café’s trailer looks fabulous and has managed to create a certain amount of anticipation.

Krrish 3 has one of the best trailers in the history of Indian cinema. The response to the trailer is awesome and the film will also appeal to kids and the family audience. Business will boom. Besharam’s trailer has Ranbir Kapoor fans waiting for the film with bated breath. His earlier films have been hits and this one too is worth waiting for. Once they release the music of the film, we will be able to assess the business of this film it is likely to generate.

Madras Café’s trailer looks interesting but the film is sandwiched between many big films. While it is releasing after two big films – Chennai Express and Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! – post its release it has Satyagraha, which again has a lot of takers. Also, the film will appeal to a certain segment of the audience since it is not massy, unlike Krrish 3 and Besharam.

The trailer of Krrish 3 has registered a record number of downloads at 3.5 million. That should tell you just how good the trailer is. The film will be a huge blockbuster. Madras Café looks like a very classy film, and it will appeal to the ‘intellectual’ multiplex audience. The trailer of Besharam gives the impression that the film is a masala entertainer. Ranbir Kapoor is now counted among the superstars in the country and the film will do very well at the box office. Besides, the film is releasing on October 2, which is a national holiday. This will give an added impetus to its collections.

Hrithik Roshan commands a huge fan following in the country so any film that he features in always elicits a similar response. Thus the trailer of Krrish 3 has also evoked a lot of excitement among the audience. The trailer has Hollywood style action and VFX sequences. The look is very slick and it has enthralled the audience no end. It is a path breaking film that will be liked by the multiplex as well as single screen audiences. In terms of opening, it’s a sure-shot winner and will cross Rs 200 crore. Besharam has had positive reviews to the trailer since it is a Ranbir Kapoor film. He is an undoubted crowd puller and has a huge appeal with movie goers. It goes without saying that it will touch the Rs 100 crore mark. And if the content of the film is good, it will cross Rs 150 crore. I’m sure even the makers of Madras Café are not aiming at the Rs 100 crore club. The trailer has produced curiosity but the film will have a limited appeal only at certain pockets.

The trailers of Krrish 3 and Besharam have elicited a fabulous response from the film industry and the audience. While the trailer of Krrish 3 was much awaited thanks to director Rakesh Roshan, actor Hrithik Roshan and the popular franchise brand that they have created over the years, the promo of Besharam has been liked because of Ranbir Kapoor whose past films have also wooed the audience. The trailer of Madras Café doesn’t seem exciting. I think the film will generate an average business of Rs 60 to 70 crore while Besharam and Krrish 3 will surely make more than Rs 100 crore.

Trailers can make or break a film’s prospects at the box office these days. Trailer launches have become a very important part of the film business. Scores of media are invited to these events so that the makers can gauge the film’s response. And going by the recently released trailer of Krrish 3, one can confidently say that it’s going to be a blockbuster. The trailer of the film has generated around 48 lakh views on their online page. They have also carpet bombed the trailer across various social media platforms which has only managed to multiply the intrigue. The trailer has already gone viral. This will have a positive impact on the film’s release as well. The Besharam trailer seems interesting but it had a lot of curiosity the day it was launched. We had print ads across newspapers screaming out about the trailer launch as a result the trailer scored around 29 lakh views online. The curiosity of the film has gone down a bit these days, but it is likely to soar again once the music will be launched. The trailer of Madras Café has only generated 8-9 lakh views since the subject of the film might not appeal to all kinds of audiences. Thus the trailer has not gone viral as well.
