As they say, everything changes on Friday. And nothing illustrates this better than Salman Khan’s Ready. The film’s opening and weekend box-office performances panned out just as predicted. What no one saw coming was the film becoming the biggest hit of the year.
Collections were expected to dip from Monday but that didn’t happen. They did fall by as much as half on Monday compared to Sunday but have been steady thereafter.
Tradewallahs attribute this turn of events to the fact that hasn’t been a big release in a while as well as Khan’s return to the big screen after ten months. Once again, this proves that if an actor spaces out his or her releases, it proves fruitful at the ticket counter.
To sum up the talk in the trade this week – if Salman Khan’s mere presence and two hit songs can result in a windfall, what would a big name and a taut storyline do to collections? No wonder every big film on our charts saw a healthy jump this week. Post Ready, the trade is jubilant and optimistic that this is just the beginning of a slew of big successes. Touch wood!
Following Ready’s stupendous success, another film that has become the talk of the town is Ajay Devgn’s Singham, an action flick that has given rise to great expectations. Another film everyone is talking about is Amitabh Bachchan’s Bbuddah...Hoga Terra Baap. Both films see two action heroes, Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan, returning in the classic role of an ‘angry young man’. Expectations from another Amitabh Bachchan starrer, Aarakshan, have also shot up.
Considering Ready’s success, the film trade is sure that Eid will once again prove very fruitful for Salman Khan. That’s when Khan has his second release of the year, Bodyguard, a South remake. This action flick will also set the box office on fire. For sure.
Riding on the current success of action films at the ticket counter, the popularity of another action film, Agneepath, is also growing. And, finally, anticipation is building for Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One after he introduced yet another trailer to the audience this week. The mega-star’s Don 2 is also considered a hot proposal and will close out 2011 on a positive note. Ditto for Prakash Jha’s magnum opus, Aarakshan.
This week, two new films are under our scanner – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) and Murder 2. Though the latter is hot among the trade, the same cannot be said about ZNMD. Reason: an uninspiring poster and trailer. We hope the production house comes up with better trailers and also promotes the film in a big way in the coming weeks.
