Solo, And Loving It

Ace music composer Tanishk Bagchi talks to Bhakti Mehta about his upcoming solo project, LoveYatri, and the songs he has created for Badhaai Ho

Ever since he gave us the hit Banno in Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Tanishk Bagchi has been generating hit tracks one after the other. Talking about his latest film, LoveYatri, he says, “I met Abhiraj (Minawala), the director, through the person who supervised the entire album. When I met Abhiraj, he had heard a couple of songs that I was working on and one song that he actually loved was Tera hua. It is the first song that they locked. Then they briefed me about the story, I also read through the script. They told me it was set in Gujarat, so we had to keep that as well as the pan-India audience in mind. The language shouldn’t be a barrier and the songs should be ones that the masses would like, even if you don’t know the language.”

He adds, “That was a big task for me. Slowly, I started working on Rangtaari, which Salman (Khan) bhai loved. That gave me the confidence to create the other songs and how I got the entire project as a solo composer. There were guest composers that came on board, DJ Chetas and Lijo George for Chogada.”

On merging folk flavour with pop music in the film, Bagchi reveals, “I worked on the song Dholida, which is inspired by folk but is not a folk song. It is a completely new and original tune. The specialty of this album is that I do recreations mostly, while this is an album where I have done all the original songs. Nothing has been recreated. Even bhai (Salman Khan) told me that he wanted only original songs”

The composer says, “I always take care that I don’t use unsuitable words like ‘daaru’. I make it a point that the lyrics are meaningful because the words and the voice are the face of the song, more than my compositions.”

Bagchi has also composed some tracks for another upcoming movie, Badhaai Ho. “I have done the two main songs of Badhaai Ho, the title song, Badhaaiyan tenu and Morni banke. I have a rapport with Ayushmann (Khurrana) because we had worked together in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. Amit (Sharma) is the director and I have also known him for a while. I always wanted to do something like this. It’s a unique idea.”

Asked about his future projects, Bagchi says, “I am currently working on Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh’s Simmba. That is also a solo project for me. There is Kesari starring Akshay Kumar. I also have one song in the upcoming film Jalebi. There are a lot of other films that I am working on too.”
