Red-hot films, bumper openings and a whirlwind promotional tour… exciting times await the trade
(This column has been faithfully tracking films in the news, good and bad. However, we’ve been receiving torrential feedback and suggestions to also track films that could potentially set the box office on fire. So, since the last few weeks, we’ve been watching all the big films that make news, regardless.)
June and July have been fabulous for the Indian film industry, with most releases being welcomed heartily by the audience. Of course, tradewallahs have been laughing all the way to the bank.
Despite its weak content, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara managed to fill up cinemas, and blockbuster duo Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn once again proved that they are one of the most successful jodis of all time. Their latest offering, Singham, opened to a bumper response at singleplexes, and at multiplexes, it kept growing with each passing show. So if June started with a bang with Salman Khan’s Ready, July concluded with Ajay Devgn’s Singham.
Considering this lucky streak at the ticket counter, two of the next big releases are looking even hotter – Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan and Salman Khan’s Bodyguard.
But what makes them even hotter is the long weekend they will each enjoy. Aarakshan will get a four-day weekend as Monday is Independence Day (a national holiday), which translates into a much bigger opening. Bodyguard is expected to hit the screen on Wednesday (Eid), thus enjoying a five-day weekend.
Remember, for the last two years, Salman Khan has broken records with both his Eid releases – Wanted and Dabangg. Now the trailer of Bodyguard has met with a phenomenal response and it seems Khan is all set to break even more records.
Post these two movies, two others – one is a romantic film and the other a rom-com – are creating ripples in the film trade. They are Imran Khan-Katrina Kaif’s Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Shahid Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor’s Mausam.
And let’s not forget, Ram Gopal Varma may have delivered several duds in the past but his next offering, Not A Love Story, is eagerly awaited. It is said that RGV is planning to spend more money on promoting the film than he had invested making the film. Also, he intends to visit a large number of cities across India with his leading lady, Mahi Gill.
