Amitabh Bhattacharya talks about Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’s title track and Bulleya and the rare time when he wrote the lyrics before the tune was composed
Amitabh Bhattacharya has worked solo on the album of Ae DIl Hai Mushkil. On bagging the coveted project he says, “I got a call from Dharma Production’s office. Karan Johar wanted me to write the song for this film. I was told that Pritam was doing the music. This is how I started working for this project. It was pretty straight.”
Amitabh mentions that it’s very rare that he writes lyrics first. He followed the same while writing the songs for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. “Karan wanted the music to be a simple love song. He wanted people to relate to the song easily. That was the primary brief for Pritam and me. We have a situation, character and plot as a brief. As far as my working process is concerned, I write my songs based on the melody. It’s rare that the music is composed after I have penned the lyrics. I always fix the words to tune. My primary source of inspiration is the melody. If the melody inspires me then I feel my thoughts flow better. With Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’s title track and Bulleya, Pritam’s melody was very touching and I could pen down the basic thought and the feel of the song. The melody helps me to get into the frame of mind of the character and react to it better,” says the lyricist.
Bhattacharya mentions that Bulleya is a sort of band song. The protagonist, Ranbir Kapoor is a singer and is practising with his fellow band players. About the brief for Bulleya, the lyricist informs, “We were told about the film and the character’s situation. The brief was that the song was more of a rock and Indie genre. It was not supposed to be very filmy. I had to keep that in mind when selecting my words.”
Throwing light on the other songs in this film, he says “The film is a love story. So in every song of this film you will find a little romantic angle, that’s the broad spectrum of it. Yet every song is different in its style and genre. We have been working on this for almost a year.”
Amitabh says that he started getting calls and messages within 24 hours of the song being released online. “I even got appreciation from the people who are not a part of the film fraternity. This is when I realised that the song has been accepted very well”
The conversation shifts to his next project Dangal, starring Aamir Khan. Amitabh smiles, “I am working for Dangal with Pritam. Daler Mehndi has sung the title. Somethings are yet to be finalised. You will get to know about the songs soon.”
